Choose Panasonic Robotics for Welding

Panasonic robotics' TAWERS series gives you more room and more arc welding control.
At first glance, Panasonic's name for this robot family seems too braggadocios: TAWERS - The Arc WElding Robot Solution. But a closer look at the TAWERS robots says otherwise. Ranging from the TA-1000WG to the TA-1900WG, each of the five arc welding robots is slim, quick, and flexible.
Completely sealed from dust, with internally routed cabling and a sophisticated cooling system, the TAWERS series robots fit well in tough environments. They were designed to work near other machinery. They can be installed from a variety of different positions, saving floorspace and providing better part accessibility.
Not sure which of the five 6-axis robots to choose? Panasonic robotics narrows down your options by payload and reach. The smallest model, the TA1000WG offers a 1068mm horizontal reach. Panasonic robotics' heftier TA-1900WG has a wide 1895mm reach. With the exception of the TA-1800WG and TA-1600WG, whose payloads are 8kg, the rest of the TAWERS series provide 6kg payloads - ideal for arc welding needs.

New Robotic Welder: The VA1400

Arc welding requires good robot posture. To produce a consistent weld, the torch and arm of a robot must be in the correct position at all times. A revolutionary new design from Motoman makes it even easier.
Motoman's new robotic welder offers an improved design with seven axes of movement, not the usual six. The "Versatile Arc" VA1400 robotic welder has an elbow (E-axis) in the lower arm. The additional flexibility allows this robot to approach each weld properly.
A slender arm, 3kg payload capacity, and through-routed cabling provides for even more versatility. This 7-axis flexibility can simplify welding configurations and do away with parts positioner needs.
The Motoman VA1400 robotic welder uses an advanced DX100 controller that can oversee up to eight robots (72 axes). It is in keeping with all ANSI/RIA, ISO, and CSA safety standards.

Robotic Welding: ArcWorld II-100 vs. AWII-100HD

Consider this scenario: you have a robotic welding job, and you've decided on a Motoman ArcWorld series cell. But what's the difference between the Motoman ArcWorld II-100 and ArcWorld II-100HD (heavy duty) robotic welding workcell?
Simply put, it all comes down to the positioner.
The ArcWorld II-100HD robotic welding cell is designed to provide more power. Outfitted with a MSR-300 180-degree turntable positioner, it can handle up to 300kg per positioner side. Its AC motor has a higher overall output rating since it's motor-controlled with hard stops. Another unique feature is a through-hole in the MSR-300 table for routing arc welding cabling and wires.
In contrast, the standard ArcWorld II-100 workcell has a MSR-200 turntable positioner with a 200kg/side payload limit. Much more flexible than its counterpart, this turntable positioner is controlled by a servo motor. Unlike the fixed AC motor MSR-300, the MSR-200 can be programmed to turn incrementally.
Both robotic welding workcells are built to house any small to medium size welding robot. They are enclosed in a full safety environment which meets all North American standards and includes interlocks, guarding, access doors, and light curtains.

Combined Strength: Hybrid Laser Arc Welding

Two is better than one. This is particularly true when it comes to Hybrid Laser Arc Welding. This application marries laser and arc welding for a unique result.
Laser welding is known for its speed, accuracy, and deep, narrow welding ability. Arc welding, on the other hand, takes a bit more time and is known for its ability to extend across gaps.
Combined, laser and arc welding are invincible. HLAW is capable of incredible arc stability, deep and broad weldments, and faster speeds.
HLAW is suitable for all the usual weld materials. However, this application is typically used for steel and aluminum because of it doesn't cause as much distortion as other welding applications.

Arc Welding Robots Can "Feel" Too

It's not a perfect world. Minor changes and imperfections in tooling and parts can alter the position of the weld joint. That's where robotic arc sensing technology comes in.
Even with their incredible repeatability, accuracy, precision, arc welding robots need a little bit of extra guidance when it comes to finding the weld joint every time. Check out two of the most common forms of robotic "feeling".

Touch Sensing
This software-based seam tracking method is the simplest to set up. One, two, or three dimensions can be electronically sensed using software, then the torch is automatically adjusted to the right spot.
This is a very reliable method, so long as the object being welded has edges for the software to use as reference points. It can add a little bit of time to the process, but it makes up for that with better welding placements.

TAST (Through Arc Seam Tracking)
With the TAST robotic arc sensing method, the welding current determines the correct placement of the torch. Software "reads" the current as it shortens or lengthens, and directs the torch relative to these signals. This Through Arc Seam Tracking process uses the current to "feel" where to weld.
Use TAST when your material is at least 2mm thick and your process is moving at 35-50 imp. TAST is not recommended for thinner materials, such as aluminum, because the changes in weld current are too miniscule to track.
RobotWorx can find the right robotic arc sensing method for you. Call 740-383-838 for more information and pricing.

Before the Weld: Preheating and Robotic Welding

Depending on their hydrogen and alloy content, some metals require preheating before they can be welded. Preheating is a preventative measure that protects materials from cracking, distorting, spalling, and thermal shock.

Why It's Important to Preheat Before Welding:
Without preheating, the weld affected zone is hard and cold. Welding causes this surface temperature to change dramatically. Rapid heating and cooling increases hydrogen levels and stresses the material considerably - leading to cracks and weakened points. Preheating prepares and treats the surface prior to welding.
Customized Solutions for Preheating:
Not sure whether or not your material should be preheated? Depending on the alloy, carbon content, size, and rigidity of your part, preheating may to your advantage. Choosing the right preheating temperatures and method will depend on the type of metal in question. Robotworx' technicians will help you determine how much (if any) preheating you need. Ask us about the possibility of building a customized system that will handle the preheating and welding in one unit.

Give Us a Call:
Need a weld system that works with or includes preheating? Contact RobotWorx at 740-383-8383 for information and pricing.

Robotic Welding and Torch Angles

In robotic welding, the angle of the welding torch often determines the quality and appearance of your weld. The best welding angle for each application can vary, depending on the type of material and thickness of the workpiece. The three primary torch angles are pull, push, and straight.
Push Angles - Since push angles are easily programmed, they are preferred by most robotic programmers. A push angle is created when a robotic welding torch moves forward, welding in front of itself.
Advantages of using push angles

The robot is able to create smooth, more desirable weld
A cleaner surface due to better gas shielding
The robot creates a more desirable bead appearance
Disadvantages of using push angles:

Increase of visible spatter
Weakening of material due to a slow cooling rate
Pull Angles - Another option is the lag angle, more commonly known as a pull angle. Pull angles are designed to work opposite of push angles, creating the weld behind the torch as it moves.
Advantages of using pull angles:

Spatter is better controlled
Narrow bead width is achieved
Deeper penetration
Disadvantages of using pull angles:

The bead appearance has larger raised areas than usual, which can lead it to overlap.
Straight Angle- A straight angle is created when the robotic welding torch is programmed to weld from a perpendicular position. Straight angles can cause many problems because they apply direct force to the material. Sometimes this focused welding approach can burn or blow through the material being welded.
For more information on torch angles and robotic welding contact RobotWorx at 740-383-8383.

The Fully Digital Panasonic GBII-350

The GBII-350 digital control power source from Panasonic is ready to meet all your welding needs.
This particular controller can be connected to any Panasonic GII robot with a single cable. It can communicate not only for motor control but also to devices such as robots and PLS for full automatic welding systems allowing quick responses and high repeatability in welding applications.
Features of the GB2-350:

Reduced Spatter -The GBII achieves less spatter by removing secondary short circuits in the welding arc, which is a leading cause of spatter.
Compact and Lightweight - Being fully digital makes the GBII-350 a lighter, more compact power source.
Superior welding performance - Is easy to achieve with the Panasonic GBII-350 digital controller. The GBII uses a wire feeder with encoder feedback. The encoder precisely feeds back the motor revolutions to the CPU which keeps the wire feed speed stable even if input voltage fluctuates.
Repeatability -More repeatable welds are achieved by the Panasonic GBII due to more uniformed welding wire input.

The New PKI System by ABB Robotics

Introducing the PKI system, a new series of torches developed by ABB. PKI torches are compact due to their short casing which gives them a wider range of movement in the fifth and sixth axes.
How can a PKI torch benefit your company?
PKI torches are available in two basic versions, the S-version (single interchange system) and the D-version (double interchange system). The PKI system can easily be changed for maintenance.
Each PKI torch is water-cooled which reduces the risk of overheating shielding gas. Water-cooling the torches also lowers the temperature of the gas nozzle. This can reduce spatter accumulating on the nozzle and reduces how often the torch needs to be cleaned.
PKI torches also feature special designed hose-swivels which improve the MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) 3-4 times. ABB offers several standard torch necks available in different angles as well as customized torches by request.

Save with Robotic Welding Peripherals

Increase Your Company's ROI
Want your robotic welding cell to run more effectively and safely?
The right peripherals will positively impact your return on investment. Here's some advice on choosing peripherals that will maintain your investment and maximize productivity.
Peripherals Prevent Damage
Collision detection will protect your robotic welding equipment from costly damages and downtime. Some robot systems use detection software that sends an electrical signal to the robot controller when it impacts another object. Safeguard your robotic system and save time and cost.
Keep Your Robot System Clean
Consider adding a nozzle-cleaning station, or reamer to your automated welding system. Reamers clean the gun nozzle and clear away debris and spatter. This extends the lifespan on the nozzle, contact tip, diffuser, and gun. A nozzle cleaning station means less downtime and higher quality welds.
The Perfect Cut
Another peripheral that will save you time and money is a wire cutter. These are especially helpful when it comes to applications that have wire stick-out. Wire cutters make sure the right wire length is maintained and all balling is removed. This additional peripheral will help your system create smoother, more reliable welds.
Inspected for Perfection
You may want to consider investing in a neck inspection fixture. This feature tests the tolerance of the robotic gun's neck. The strain of routine welding or any other impact can bend the neck out of alignment.
Peripherals Lead to Increased Savings
Despite their initial investment cost, the right peripherals will dramatically increase your savings and profits.
Need a peripheral for your robotic welding system? Contact RobotWorx at 740-383-8383 for pricing and availability.

The Advantages of Robotic GTAW

Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is often used when making items such as bicycle and motorcycle frames, where appearance is critical. Manual GTAW requires a high level of agility, talent, focus and control and has been greatly avoided due to the complexity involved.
Being a slow process, GTAW is now commonly performed by robotic welding. Using a robotic system has many advantages such as:

Improved Productivity:
Manual welders is likely to tire from repetitiveness where a robot is capable of consistently performing the same weld time and time again.

Fewer Repairs, Mistakes:
With a robotic system the welding angle, filler rate, weld location, and parameters can all be preset and maintained.

Increased Safety:
In the GTAW process manual welders are required to use their foot to control the current, one hand to balance a torch and the other handling a filler rod. This can be both difficult and dangerous for even the most skilled welders.

5 Ways to Prevent Weld Spatter

If certain preventative steps aren't followed, even an arc welding robot can create spatter.
The molten metal droplets that make up spatter are messy, dangerous, and wasteful. Spatter is hazardous to operators. It creates rough and unsightly welds and it is very difficult and time-consuming to remove.
However, spatter doesn't have to be an issue. Clean up your spatter with these five tips.

Up the Voltage
Cut down on spatter by adjusting your voltage. Voltage is closely tied to the welding arc's length and the heat input of the weld. Find the right balance, so the weld is being created with the right intensity.

Make Sure the Welding Surface is Clean
One simple way to avoid spatter is to keep your welding surface free from contamination. Substances like oil may trigger the welding power supply to alter parameters settings - creating spatter before and after the right adjustments are made.
Anything that oxidizes the weld pool (such as rust) may cause bubbles - which burst, creating more spatter. It's best to clean the surface and avoid the mess. Remove buildup with an abrasive tool or chemical.

Secure the Welding Environment
In the fight against spatter, wind is an enemy. Make sure your shielding gas isn't being affected by air circulation. Another environmental problem that causes spatter, cable grounding, can be easily fixed. Make sure cabling is secure and on clean surfaces, otherwise, you may have weld altercations.

Find the Right Torch Angle
Angling your torch with the wire in front may make a nice, smooth weld, but it shoots spatter outward. A drag angle with the wire behind, keeps spatter in the weld pool.

Pay Attention to theShielding Gas and Wire
Make sure your shielding gas and wire are preventing spatter, not contributing to it. Argon gas can minimize spatter, but it can change other aspects of the weldment. Lots of wires have deoxidizing substances in them, which will decrease the amount of spatter. Flux cored wires are a good safeguard against spatter.

OTC Welding: The Synchro MIG and FC MIG

OTC Daihen takes
robotic welding coordination to the next level with two innovative functions. The
OTC Synchro MIG and FC MIG make it possible to get the right results every time - even when welding extra-thin aluminum or two thicknesses.
Synchro MIG - This innovative
function coordinates the welding torch placement with the current. This feature
is ideal for welding different thicknesses together. Whereas before there was
an unsightly and unnecessary back bead, with the OTC Synchro MIG, the heat
intensity changes with thinner materials. The result is a top-quality, more attractive
weld. OTC's system makes sure the heat input matches the material.

FC MIG (feed control) - With this system, OTC coordinates pulsed current
with wire feed speed. This synchronization results in a cleaner, more
consistent bead. The FC MIG is well-suited for welding thin aluminum. For TIG
results with a MIG process, try the FC MIG.

Fronius' Magic Cleaner

Abracadabra! A clean weld was never easier! The compact, efficient Fronius Magic Cleaner machine uses electrochemicals to clean, polish and print.

With a Magic Cleaner, the discoloration and rough texture of welds is removed. The result is a weld that looks and feels like the original base material. The Magic Cleaner can also "print" logos and other graphics electrochemically.

Magic Cleaner Better Than Other Methods:
Welds are normally cleaned by grinding or using toxic chemicals. Both methods have drawbaccks. Grinding can damage the weld and the surrounding metal. Toxic chemicals are harmful to the workers and the environment. They also require a permit to use.

MIG vs. TIG - Which One is Right for You?

TIG and MIG seem similar, but they aren't. Take a look at the pros and cons of TIG and MIG welding and you'll know which one to choose.

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding is a very common arc welding application. Typically utilized for automotive applications, it uses a continuous and consumable wire electrode and shielding gas to create the weld.

The Advantages of MIG Welding:

MIG is Faster: If you're looking for speed, MIG provides a fast welding answer. It is a very easy process to automate.

MIG Welding is User-friendly: MIG is typically more user-friendly and easy to set up. The process tends to be more forgiving.

MIG is More Affordable: MIG equipment is less costly and more accessible than other welding equipment.
MIG Disadvantages:
MIG Doesn't Always Work: MIG welding is not the best solution for every type of metal or every type of weldment.
MIG is Messy: The MIG process creates more spatter and smoke than TIG.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is used primarily in the aerospace industry. More complicated than MIG welding, this process combines a non-consumable tungsten electrode, a shielding gas (MIG) and typically a filler metal.

The Advantages of TIG Welding:

TIG is Clean: TIG welding doesn't create as much spatter and sparks as MIG. It creates a better work environment with less smoke and fumes.

Autogenous TIG Welds: TIG welding can create autogenous welds - those that do not involve any filler material. The weld is created when the part melts together. This type of weldment is commonly used for parts in the aerospace community.

TIG is Precise: TIG welding offers more precision when it comes to thin materials. It produces welds without contamination.
TIG Disadvantages:
Cost: TIG equipment is more sophisticated, so it is also more costly.
Time: If you're looking for fast installation, robotic TIG welding isn't your best bet. It takes a while to set up and performs a bit slower than MIG.
Complications: TIG tends to be less forgiving and not as user-friendly as MIG. Parts and components must be in pristine condition for TIG welding.

Now that you know which application you need, it's time to choose a robot. Submit an online request, call RobotWorx at 740-383-8383, or use our robot advisor to narrow your choices.

How to Maintain Used Robotic Welding Equipment

It pays to perform routine maintenance on your used robotic welding equipment. With a few simple check-ups, you can avoid costly production lapses, faulty welds, and damaged equipment.

Robotic welding equipment has to have a specific balance to produce good results. Keep your used robotic welding equipment in tip-top condition with these four tips:

Double-Check Welding Leads: Make sure to look at the welding cable connections. Positive welding leads must travel between the power source and wire feeder, negative cabling connects the power source to work piece, table and fixture. If you encounter power problems with your used robotic welding equipment, bad wiring is the most likely culprit.

Pay Attention to Wire Feeder: Weld quality will suffer if the drive roll has the wrong tension or you're using improperly sized rollers. Make sure your used robotic welding equipment is adjusted to fit your specific needs.

Inspect the Welding Torch: When it comes to used robotic welding equipment, one of the most important items is the EOAT, the welding torch itself. Start by making sure the welding torch nozzle is unclogged. Next, check gas flow through the robotic welding gun. Damaged robotic welding equipment such as bad contact tips will produce poor welds.

Test Your Tool Center Point (TCP): This programmable point is determined by inputting measurements into the robotic welding controller. This allows the robot to execute complex movements while still maintaining the proper torch angle/orientation

How's Your Robot Welding?

Welding can be a fickle application. One small alteration or misalignment can dramatically affect weld quality. Even with a robot welding in your shop, it's important to pay attention to weld quality. Chances are the culprit is something that's relatively easy to adjust.

Here are some common weld quality problems to watch for and their chief causes:

Porosity: Does the weld have holes or bubbles in it? Porosity occurs when gases are trapped within the metal before it solidifies. Porosity is a common weld problem with many contributors:

Environment: Some of the causes of weld porosity may be environmental. With a robot welding in windy conditions or on a wet or oily surface, porosity is almost a given. Try to place your robot in favorable welding environments. Keep your part dry and clean to avoid this robot welding problem.

EOAT: To avoid porosity, make sure the robot welding has been adjusted correctly and the welding EOAT is clean. Sometimes porosity is the result of a long or short stick out, clogged welding gun nozzle, or insufficient shielding gas. Check your welding robot to make sure it isn't in need of cleaning or adjustments.
Misplaced Weld:
Make sure you have your robot weld in the right spot. Misplaced robot welding is useless and may require you to scrap the part. However, misplaced welds are sometimes the easiest to fix, especially with a robot welding.

Tooling Misalignments: Most likely the problem isn't directly connected with the robot at all. Misplaced welds can result when tooling (EOAT or fixed) is not locating a part accurately. Check for loose connections and fittings. Sometimes a piece part isn't within tolerance. Make sure everything is in properly affixed in the right locations so your robot can place the weld correctly.
Is the robot welding with a misaligned torch? Make sure the welding gun is pointed in the right place. While instances are rare, a robot may have an internal repeatability problem. Check to make sure the home position is correct. Double check the installation location as well.
Rough Appearance and Undercut:
An undercut weld is created when a groove is melted and remains unfilled by weld metal. The same things that cause undercuts can also create rough weld surfaces.

Power Problem: Check your amperage and voltage. If you don't have the right electric current flowing through the gun, there will be multiple welding problems. A quick adjustment should fix the undercut and restore your weld appearance.
EOAT: Is your torch aligned correctly?
Robot Speed: Is everything moving quickly enough? If the robot welding moves too fast or slow, the weld will be affected. Double check welding speeds.
Undersize Welds:
Is your weld too short or too shallow? If your robot welds are undersized, here are a few things to check into:

Check Wire Feed and Power: With a robot, welding is completely regulated. However, if you have insufficient amperage or wire feeding problems, your weld will suffer. Make sure your robot welding process is integrated so EOAT, wire feed, and power are working with, not against each other.

Pay Attention to Travel Speed: If your welding gun is traveling too quickly, your weld will not have sufficient time to for. Undersized welds will not hold.

Piece Part Gaps: Undersized welds may be caused by gaps in piece parts that are too large. Rearrange piece parts so your welding gun will be able to access them and form a proper weld.
In Conclusion: Even when you have a robot welding, it makes a lot of sense to employ robotic operators that have welding knowledge. A knowledgeable welder will be able to quickly discern what is causing a bad weld and how to fix it.

The Top 5 Advantages of Spot Welding with Robots

More than half of today's industrial robots are spot welders. That's because there are so many advantages to choosing them. Here are the top
five reasons to spot weld with robots:

1) Spot Welding Guns are Heavy
The guns used for spot welding applications are among the largest and heaviest.
They often weigh as much as 200lbs. This bulk and weight can be hard for the
average worker to handle day in and day out. Robots, on the other hand, work
without fatigue.

2) Spot Welding is Dangerous
Not only are spot welding guns difficult to handle, but the work environment
created by spot welding is full of hazardous sparks and welding fumes. With robots,
workers can oversee the process from a safe distance.

3) Repeatability is Critical for Spot Welding
One of the main advantages of robotic spot welding is consistency. A
typical automotive frame may require more than 100 welds. With manual spot
welding, workers can create a defective product by under or over-welding a
part. This in turn leads to unnecessary cost and waste. Robots are programmed
to weld in the same place at the same rate, every single time. This saves money
and effort by creating a reliable, high-quality product every time.

4) Spot Welding Requires Speed
Robots are efficient, quick workers. They do not alter their movements or waste
energy unnecessarily. It is easy to increase the speed of your spot welding
line by adding robots. Multiple robots can be orchestrated to spot weld a
product more effectively than multiple human workers can be.

5) Spot Welding is Best When Flexible
Spot welding robots adapt to different parts and situations with ease. Workers
need time to train and learn about new parts and processes, but a robot is
programmed quickly for each new task. With robots, there isn't a learning
process. Robots can accommodate a wide variety of part sizes and shapes.

Robot Cables: The New Triflex R

The Triflex R is an innovative solution for robot cable management.

Without proper consideration, robot cables wear out easily. They also create trip hazards. Managing and safeguarding robot cabling is important. You can save time and money by considering this detail.

The new Triflex R is a multi-axis energy chain system built by Igus. Its ball and sock design allow it to follow even the most awkward path. The Triflex R can twist 380 degrees per yard. Tight corners are easily navigated and the cabling lasts longer because it is fully protected.

Like most kids his age, Andrew Chapman likes to watch videos after school. But that's where the similarity stops.

This Hilliard youth doesn't watch just any old movie. Instead of curling up in front of Disney films or cartoons, Andrew watches RobotWorx robot videos online.

Maybe it is the precision of the robot movements, or the flash of welding applications that appeal to him. Perhaps he likes the roar the machinery makes. Maybe he's already planning to pursue a degree in engineering. Whatever the reason, his mother Janel Chapman jokes that his avid video viewing has no doubt accounted for a lot of visits to the RobotWorx website.

For Andrew, nothing could compare with the chance to see the robots in person. He was able to last week when his family toured RobotWorx with salesman Tim Brady.

"Though a little shy, he really enjoyed it," Janel said. At the end of the tour, Tim gave Andrew a RobotWorx baseball cap. It remained on Andrew's head for an entire weekend.

Welding is one of the most commonly automated applications. The reason is simple. Welding robots offer a nearly unbeatable return on investment. By protecting workers, improving product, eliminating waste, and upping production, industrial welding robots provide real savings for any business.
First, with welding automation, product quality often improves. Instead of losing money because of a faulty product, with welding robots business owners are able to up prices. High quality products are more marketable because customers are attracted to their reliability.
Second, welding robots often increase overall productivity. They are able to work quickly and consistently without stopping. The entire welding cycle is regulated. Robots streamline the time spent to create an arc, for instance.
Third, industrial welding robots are less prone to error. Since they provide incredible repeatability, materials are conserved. There is less wasted metal and filler, and fewer costly mistakes.
Fourth, with the introduction of welding robots, human workers move to supervisory positions. With robots, workers no longer combat welding fumes, burns, and flash. This leads to better general health and few accidents - two things that can cost business owners considerably.

Cover Models: RobotWorx' Welding Robots Appear in Tech Magazines

A RobotWorx dual-robot welding system recently appeared on the magazine cover of RTC (Real-Time Computing) and alongside an Industrial Embedded Systems article.

Simteck Corporation, the creator of SRAM and other non-volatile memory products, approached RobotWorx about robot photos to run with their articles. The image chosen was of two arc welding ABB robots working in tandem. Simtek's intelligent memory technology creates a safer work environment for robots and humans using transaction logging and recovery agent software. It could be said that Simtek's technology gives robots the capacity to think ahead.

Both articles discuss the benefits of non-volatile memory systems when used by industrial robotic systems. The October 2007 RTC feature article, "Implementing Safety in Real-Time System with Non-Volatile Memory Technology," explains how this memory software eliminates accidents and coordinates robots working in teams. It orchestrates multiple robot systems by making sure every axis completes its entire task every time.
The picture's second appearance, in the Industrial Embedded Systems Fall 2007 issue, was used along with the article, "Non-Volatile SRAM Improves Rapid Recall in Multiple Axis Robotics." Simtek explains the impact that snSRAM has on robots. This memory isn't lost when a robot loses power or is interrupted by radiated noise. With nvSRAM, robots do not automatically return to "home position," an involuntary action that has injured and even killed human operators.

New Panasonic Robot: TAWERS-TIG Offers Versatility, High Quality Welds

TIG welding, also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), is arguable one of the hardest welding processes to perfect, but Panasonic's new TAWERS-TIG configuration tackles every challenge. The result: fast, spatter-free, precision arc welds.

In TIG welding, the arc is created between a tungsten electrode and the metal. The entire process is shielded with gas. TIG welding can be a finicky process for a number of reasons.

Starting and maintaining a TIG arc can be a challenge because of the heat and noise that accompanies the high frequency voltage. Panasonic's "Touch Start" makes sure the heat is consistent and the noise nonexistent.

Panasonic has designed the TAWERS-TIG "Filler-Torch" to speed up the wire feed, yet another sticky point for this application. By minimizing the space between the wire and the electrode, Panasonic allows the wire to heat the wire before it flows into place. This method makes for high-quality, continuous welding.

TAWERS-TIG is easy to install - making conversion from MAG and MIG welding to TIG a matter of adding new peripherals. Designed for use with any TAWERS welding robot, Panasonic's TAWERS-TIG consists of a torch, feed unit, and additional DC/Pulse TIG welding software (YA-1QPMT1).

Panasonic's TAWERS-TIG is a reliable arc welding solution for precision needs. It offers consistent weld performance, speed, accuracy, and a slim design for close welding. Call 740-383-8383 for more information.

10 Questions to Ask When Buying a Robotic Welding System

How much does the system cost?
Look for a high-quality affordable model. Consider the advantages of used welding robotic systems. RobotWorx promises to beat any competitor's price by 10%. Used welding systems from RobotWorx can cost more than 50% less than a new system.

How many robots are in the cell?
Determine how many robots are included in each cell. Find out if you have the option to integrate more than one robot. Two robots essentially cut a weld time in half, therefore doubling production.

What is the robot reach?
If the robot doesn't reach your parts you will need to add intermediate steps. The operator may have to reposition a part so the robot can reach the weld joint.

Do I need a positioner?
An external positioner may be necessary for a welding robot to reach the majority of weldments. Determine how long a positioner's working envelope should be. Is this included in the quote?

Which welding power source is included?
Make sure the quote includes the appropriate welding power source. The power source should match the job at hand. If you are simply welding carbon steel, a standard constant voltage unit would be the appropriate choice. If you are welding non-ferrous materials or have any concern about spatter levels on thinner gauge materials, a pulsing power source is best.

What kind of training is included?
Check whether the system comes with training. Find out how many people can attend and how many days are included. At RobotWorx, you can train on your own system. You are welcome to send any number of people and stay as long as you like. After a few days of one-on-one with your project manager you are encouraged to spend time programming the system on your own while it's at our facility.

Is there a run-off option?
Running off actual parts to test a system's functionality can be very valuable. If a RobotWorx customer sends in parts and tooling, we will mount the tooling and assist in programming/parameter development as a part of the training process.

What is the delivery and shipping schedule?
Make sure to check into the delivery schedule and shipping arrangements.

Does the system come with a safety package?
Keep safety measures in mind when you consider a new welding system. What does the safety package include - fencing, arc glare shields, interlock doors, light curtains/safety mats? Check to see if the system is compliant with RIA 15.06-1999 or any other safety guideline your facility requires.

Is the appropriate software included in the price of the robot?
If the wrong software is loaded on the machine, or there isn't any loaded at all, you will have trouble accomplishing your task. If you're using a robot for arc welding for example, make sure arc welding software is loaded.

Trust your arc welding to ABB's slim torch family. The PKI torches are available in 15 variations to accommodate different materials. A short casing increases flexibility by streamlining the torch.

These ABB arc welding torches are designed to facilitate easy maintenance. The PKI torch neck can be replaced and maintained easily whether there's a collision or a repair-related need. The PKI S version is a single interchange option. The PKI D-version offers double interchange capability with a detachable hose bundle. The D-version delivers a faster uptime.

Motoman Robotic Systems South Africa installed the country's biggest gantry welding system in April of this year. Transwerk, a locomotive manufacturer, now has five Motoman welding systems at their Bloemfontein facility, and six robot systems at Koedoes-poort. Automation, is taking root in this progressive African country.

South Africa's push to automate has impacted RobotWorx as well. This spring, RobotWorx sent a robot to Moto Worx, a manufacturer of aluminum rims in Guateng, South Africa. The company purchased a used Motoman K60. Like RobotWorx' K60, the majority of South Africa's robots are used in the automotive industry. Research Channel Africa reports that industrial robots are also beginning to be incorporated for heavy fabrication.

South Africa is already one of the most successful countries in the continent, but robots should help it become even more competitive. Robots can assist companies in becoming more productive while maintaining excellent product quality.

Robot automation should offer an answer to South Africa's shortage of skilled workers. Still, robots don't eliminate the need for knowledgeable programmers and operators. Motoman Robotic Systems South Africa offers training to customers. Most of the major robotics manufacturers have put up shop in South Africa. Motoman came to the country in 1992. Today they have multiple branches. Fanuc SA, for example, has been in existence since 1968.
While robot automation is just beginning in Africa, it is already noticeable. The International Federation of Robotics reports 951,000 robots in operation worldwide - 1% of these are in Africa.

Welding Robots: The Answer to America's Skilled Welder Shortage

The United States is facing a dire shortage of skilled welders. According to the American Welding Society there will be 200,000 fewer welders by 2010. During this year alone, 50,000 welders retire while only 25,000 begin their welding education. America's welding population is aging. Most of them are from the baby boomer generation.

Another contributor to the shortage is the changing welding field. Welding technology has become more sophisticated. More training is necessary for workers to begin even at an entry level. False perceptions of welding as dangerous and dirty persist even though today's welding is cleaner, safer, and more lucrative than ever before.

Automation may be the best solution to America's welding crisis. U.S. manufacturers are beginning to realize that robots are affordable, effective alternatives to outsourcing or closing. Robotic welding maintains and often improves quality, production, and throughput. Robots can take the place of more than one welder; hopefully this will help fill the deficit.

The threat to American manufacturing is eminent. AWS estimates that 450,000 welding jobs will be created by 2014. The National Association of Manufacturers and Deloitte reports 81% of manufacturers can not find the welders they need. Robot systems are a fast answer. They can keep America's manufacturing afloat.

When to Choose Tandem GMAW

More wire or more robots?
When choosing a welding system, it's important to find one that fits your budget and your application. This is especially true when it comes to Tandem Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).

Tandem Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is a process that involves two wires fed through a single torch. The system uses two power supplies and a central controller. While the Tandem GMAW may be more productive for some applications, one power supply can cost as much as a robot.

When it comes to larger parts and heavier welding applications, Tandem GMAW has true advantages. For these projects, a Tandem GMAW may be faster because longer weldments can be handled with a single pass. The intensity of this welding method is an advantage for these types of projects.

If your application involves multiple shorter welds and thinner material, consider adding another robot rather than choosing Tandem GMAW. Because of its intensity, Tandem GMAW can occasionally burn through thinner materials. It is also more complicated to set up and maintain. Multiple robots save time because there is less of a need to reposition the torch. Traditional arc or spot welding robots will more than meet your needs with this project type.
